“What fucking nerve he has.” Erik balled his fists so tightly they trembled as he sat in his jail cell.
Like it wasn't already bad enough – everything that had already happened. The amazing amount of bullshit Cole had created for him in such a short amount of time. The guy was a magnet for trouble. It followed him everywhere. Cole was like King Midas, except instead of gold, everything he touched turned into garbage!
But on top of all that. This was how he was going to spend his weekend. In a jail cell. Thanks to Cole and his goddamn drugs.
An officer unlocked his jail cell. “Severyn? Come with me.”
He ignored Cole's advice – Cole had told him not to talk to the police. But what the hell did Cole know? That was great advice … if you were a guilty drug addict who had all sorts of criminal behavior to hide. Normal everyday people? Why wouldn't they talk to the police? He had nothing to hide, after all. All he had to do was reason with the police, and they'd understand what had happened.
But the officer interviewing him sure gave him a skeptical stare. And more and more, he seemed immune to logic and reason.
“So … lemme get this straight. You're saying the vial of powder you sold that kid was not Rip.”
“Right! Yes! That's exactly what I'm saying. I told you, I'm a researcher at LumiChem, and that powder was a chemical I created years ago! It was nothing more than a sleep aid!”
The officer gave him a funny look and laughed. “Yeah. 'Sleep aid.'” He made air quotes with his fingers. “That's what the Rip-heads call their shit, too.”
“You're not listening to me!”
The officer flipped through Erik's folder. The one with all his research on the chemical known as Snoozphoria. He looked at every page and gave a chuckle, like he was looking at a teenager's terrible alibi, a bogus cover story.
“Uh huh … right … and it just so happens that your so-called 'Snoozo-phrenia' is the same, chemically, as Rip …”
“Snoozphoria,” Erik corrected him. “But yes! Exactly!”
“But if I search the internet for Snooz-whatever, there's exactly 0 results for it.”
“It's a proprietary drug, it never made it past clinical trials, that's why. It's a trade secret.”
“… Yet the man you sold this chemical to, a well-known Rip addict, is convinced that what you sold him is Rip …”
“Well – no – I didn't sell it.”
“Right. That was all just a misunderstanding. A big, convenient misunderstanding.”
“It was anything but convenient.” Erik groaned and buried his face in his hands. “This is such a mess.”
“For you, yeah, it sure looks like it.”
Erik let out a pained wail. Maybe Cole was right. “Officer, I think I'm gonna wait to say anymore until I have a lawyer.”
“Have it your way. But I don't see what the hell a lawyer's gonna be able to do for you, buddy. You're looking at some serious prison time right now.”
“Ugh. Great. Just great.”
